Trying to recreate Paolo Roversi

I was watching some YouTube videos when I came across this one: [link]. It featured a photographer attempting to recreate the style of Paolo Roversi, which sent me down a rabbit hole exploring Roversi’s work. After spending some time studying his photography, I decided I wanted to try recreating some of his signature lighting effects using a torch.
I booked a studio and a model for the afternoon, but the shoot didn’t start smoothly. Once I arrived and began setting up, I realized I had forgotten the torch I planned to use at home!
Once I got everything sorted, we experimented with long exposures. We used a 30-second exposure, painting the model with the torch at a low setting. Then, we asked her to move and continued painting the scene, creating a translucent, almost ethereal effect. The combination of light and movement produced some really interesting, ghostly images.
I really enjoyed the shoot and the creative process. Next time, I want to focus more on the final images themselves rather than just experimenting with the process. That said, this session was a fantastic learning experience, and I can’t wait to try it again.
Here are a few highlights from the shoot:
